Described for a right-handed server; the tips on reading and returning speak to the receiver.
How to read it
- The backhand face is upright and the racket moves straight forward and fast.
- The first bounce is close to the server's end line.
- The backswing is short and low — if the racket does not wind in to the left hip, expect speed rather than sidespin.
- The server's weight goes forward into the ball.
How to return it
- Keep a starting position that leaves room for a long ball.
- Attack it: a compact loop or drive, using the speed that is already on the ball.
- Into the body: step aside first, then play — do not reach across yourself.
Common mistakes when serving it
- First bounce in the middle of your own half, which makes the serve slow or long.
- An open blade: the serve then floats and sits up.
- A bigger backswing than on your short backhand serve, which announces it.
