How Table Tennis England ratings are calculated

The Table Tennis England rating is the number behind the English rankings. It changes after every match against another rated player, by an amount read from a points table.

The points table

The rating gap selects a row. A win over a weaker player and a loss to a stronger one are expected and move little; an upset moves a lot. The table below is the 1.0 column — the one used for the English Leagues Cup below the Finals and for Junior and Cadet BCL.

Event weightings

Bigger events count more: each has a weighting, and the points come from that weighting’s column of the table. For losses the columns stop at 1.5 — every event weighted 1.5 or more costs the same as 1.5.

Match by match

Results are calculated from your starting point in strict order of play: your rating moves after every match, and the next one is scored from the new number. No rating goes below 100, and a rating below 100 is never used in a calculation.
