How USATT ratings are calculated

A USATT rating is the number USA Table Tennis gives every player in its tournaments and in USATT League. After each event it is recalculated from the matches you played, in two passes. The same rules apply to tournaments and leagues.

The points exchange chart

Every match moves points from the loser to the winner — the same number both ways. How many depends on the rating gap and on who won: an expected win is worth little, an upset a lot.

Pass 1: adjustments

First, every match is scored on the chart from your current rating. If the event shows that you are clearly better than your rating, it is adjusted before anything else:

The final pass

Then every match is scored again on the chart, starting from the adjusted rating. That is why an adjusted rating ends up lower than “old rating + all the points”: the same wins count for less from the higher starting point. Below 100, a player loses at most 3 points a match.

What a calculator cannot know

USATT also adjusts underrated and unrated opponents in the same tournament. If one of yours was, the official result differs from what their entered rating gives.
