How Dutch table tennis Elo ratings (NTTB) are calculated

The Dutch table tennis association (NTTB) keeps an Elo rating for every player. Each match moves it by a whole number of points taken from two tables: one for expected results, one for upsets.

Expected and unexpected results

When the higher-rated player wins, the points come from the “verwachte resultaten” table; when the lower-rated player wins, from the “onverwachte resultaten” table, which gives far more. The rating gap selects the row.

Wins are weighted by the event

Each table has six columns, R0 to R5, from small events to the Dutch Championships. The winner’s points come from the event’s column. The loser’s points always come from the R1 column — halved at R0 events and reduced in the youth competitions.
